week 1 Feb 26th
During the first week of the FMP project i had to come up with an idea, I started off by research different meanings for the word flight using a thesaurus , after getting an understanding of what flight can mean I began to create some mind maps to generate my ideas. I related my mind maps to what I was interested in, this included music, for my last FMP in the first year I created promotional material for my own festival so I thought I would do something similar this year, I came up with the idea to create promotional material for a bands tour, this will include tour dates and locations promotional flyers promoting the tour. I also considered another idea of producing a documentary about Cornwall and including the key features it with holds such as beaches, towns scenery and buildings.
week 2 march 5th
During the second week of this project we continued to research the term flight and developed my mind map ideas more I have now decided to make some promotional visual affects as well as just graphic design, this is because i want to try out new skills with moving image and this would be a good opportunity to do so. I also began to plan for my pitch which I would present to my class explaining what my idea is and what I will be creating.
week 3 march 12th
in the third week of this project I began to create my sketch book, I wanted to be creative with my sketchbook so I decided to to get a load of stickers and stick them on the front of my book I then went online and got a cool font saying ‘Flight’ (the name of this project) and stuck in the centre of my sketch book I then printed out a close up of an eagles face and stick it on the book, I had some spare stickers left over so I continued to stick some more on the front and the back. I also started to prepare myself for the pitch that I would deliver yo my class explaining my idea and how I will achieve it. I explained that I will be working in photoshop and using my own photos for the album cover and some of the posters.
week 4 March 19th
Unfortunately on the Monday of this week college was closed for day so I worked from home by adding more to my pitch, such as including typography (fonts I am considering of using) and also colours I am hoping to include with examples. After finishing them I presented my pitch to my class explaining my ideas and what I am hoping to create. They then gave me feedback which will then help me where i need to improve on and what needs to be added. i then created a table showing my feedback which enabled me to see where I needed to improve on and where to add more detail. I then began to find existing products such as rap and hip- hop posters and existing album covers from some rap and hip hop artist that appeal to me, I also considered colour themes such as black, white, red and blue as these types of colours occur in the rap and hip-hop industry fairly often.
week 5 March 26
During the fifth week of this project I gathered some real existing posters that promote artist and the location of where they were playing and stuck them into my sketchbook. On the Wednesday of this week I went up to Bournemouth for a university interview so I was unable to come in on that day but I was back in on the Thursday and continued my SWOT analysis
week 6 April 2nd
As it was easter this week I took a couple days off but after it had all past I started to look at existing event posters and line ups which i have included in my sketch book. As my dad works at Falmouth University lecturing business and events management he has to go to events and grade them this means that he ends up bringing back promotional from the event. I’m looking at these posters and line ups to give me a better understanding of what to include when I create my own.
week 7 April 9th
This week I continued to do secondary research on how to format my posters and album covers looking at the existing products, using the posters and album covers in my sketchbook I picked out the fonts I liked and any effects that have been put onto the posters making it look the way it does.
week 8 April 16th
This week we returned back to college after the easter holidays I began to start taking photos of my model for an album cover for my test product, I booked out the photography studio I gave Piran (model) some clothes and props such as jewellery and money, hats, bags that i thought would be appropriate for a hip hop artist to wear. I range of shots from all different angles in hope to find around 5/6 images that I could potentially use in my promotional material.
I then felt that I needed some more photos of Piran wearing some different clothing and props so I bought in some chains, rings and sun glasses and some other clothing that thought would look better and again took many photos hoping to find around 5 that look professional and can seen as piran to be a hip hop artist.
week 9 April 23rd
This week using the photos I had taken the week before I created an album cover and back for my test product. This is the front cover of the album. I started off by having a black background the embedding my main image of piran towards the left hand side, I then inserted the artists name (Big Meldrid) using a serif font named edition, then using the paint bucket tool and a luminous green changed the colour of the font and then used the the eraser tool to put thin lines through it. I then got floating dollars of the internet and placed them over the main image then using the magic wand tool got rid of the unnecessary white, some of the dollars were covering the main image so using the eraser I got rid of them and some that were only slight covering the image I erased them so that it looks like some of the dollars are going behind him. doing this then made space for the name of the album to be fitted in (fight) I tried a variety of fonts but i ended up with the digital font and used the paint bucket tool to change the colours. but looking back I feel that he font choice wasn’t the right one to use as it looks out of place and doesn’t really fit with the theme well.
I also created a back cover for the cd album, I started off by making a black background then got a 100 dollar bill with out Benjamin Franklin’s face then inserted my artist’s face (piran). I then went to image adjustments and changed the hue saturation and turned the colour to a pinky purple then change the colour of the dollar using the paint bucket tool and out lined the 100 with purple and yellow than included the artist name below the main image in yellow using the text tool, I then added a few different pieces of text such as the ‘certified gangster’ in the top left the my artist real name in the bottom left using the text tool. I used a variety of different colours as in this day and age hip ho music is using vibrant colours to make their creations more unique and visually pleasing.
We also had our presentation panel this week which involved me showing two lectures my ideas, my research and the two test products I had made, they then gave me feedback and said that I shouldn’t cram as many hip hop conventions in as possible and should try make something a bit more simpler. They also said to make sure my research links to my research and explain why have chosen the way it looks and examples I have taken my ideas from.
week 10 April 30th
This week I created another front album cover which is more simple and not as many conventions crammed in, I kept the theme of money by giving him a neck tattoo of a dollar sign putting a dollar sign in the right hand corner and my model is holding money, I decided to try a black and white effect which is opposite to my other design. although it is quite simple I feel this can be just as effective as it is different to other hip hop albums. I started off by embedding my main image of the rapper changed the colour to black and white the changed the background to match the colour of the background. I then placed the same image over the the main image then used the eraser tool to get rid of it but only leaving the money in his and and kept the colour the same so it looked like it was only him who was back and white and the money was green. Then using the paint brush tool I filled in the logo on his shirt yellow to make it stand out more and to add more colour. i then considered a variety of fonts then came to the conclusion of deciding a sans serif font that is similar to my other choices of fonts to keep an on going theme. After in placed a parental advisory logo to show that the album will include explicit content.
This week I have been considering fonts to use, i found 30 different ones that I could potentially use in my promotional material
week 11 May 7th
During the 11th week of this project I began designing a tour date poster for my hip- hop/ trap artist, I started by embedding my main image in the centre of the page then using the eraser tool I removed everything else in the image apart from the artist I then made a square using the shape tool and used the paint bucket tool to change the colour to yellow, I chose yellow as I wanted bright vibrant colours to stand out in contrast with the black background, then I gathered a glitch effect off the internet and placed in behind the artist inside the square I then turned down the opacity on the artist so you can just slightly see the glitch effect through him. After including my main images I looked at various fonts that I could potentially use.
I then decided to go with the first font to keep an ongoing theme using the same font for the artist’s name (Papa Pueblo) in all my designs. I then used the same font for the ‘flight tour’ sub title as well. I then researched popular locations in America where hip hop/ trap artists perform then inserted them into my design bellow the flight tour sub title using the text tool, I then put dates next to the cities but dividing them up from side to side using a line I made with the shape tool. all the shapes and colour of the font is yellow, this way it stands out more and catches the persons eye more easily.
When creating this tour date poster I looked at existing products of tour date posters and used them as inspiration to see how they have been laid out, images used and variety of fonts.
I also researched the meaning of album covers, one of the ones I researched was Ice Cube’s Death certificate
ICE CUBE Death Certificate released October 29, 1991 by Priority Records and EMI
Ice Cube’s real name is O’Shea Jackson, he was born on June 15, 1969 (aged 48) in Los Angeles, California
The albums content held racially and politically charged content, Ice Cube’s statements on drug dealing, racial profiling, and the right to keep and have possession of armed weaponry, Death Certificate was the source of much controversy upon its release. In 2003, Priority Records re-released Death Certificate with the bonus track “How to Survive in South Central”, which originally came from the Boyz n the Hood soundtrack. Death Certificate included the diss track “No Vaseline” which is a response to his previous rap group N.W.A, and their album Niggaz4Life which included diss tracks and verses to Ice Cube.
While making Death Certificate, Ice Cube was said to be involved with the Nation of Islam, which had a large impact on the of the album’s content, although he denied being part of the organization. Death Certificate was approximately organized as two particular elements of a larger whole, and opens with Cube’s explanation: “The Death Side: a mirror image of where we are today; The Life Side: a vision of where we need to go.” The first half, therefore, it talks about stories of drug dealing, whore-mongering and violence expected of a gangsta rap album in 1991.
Uncle Sam, was popular symbol for the United States, usually associated with a cartoon figure having long white hair and chin whiskers and dressed in a swallow-tailed coat, vest, tall hat, and striped trousers. His appearance originated from two earlier symbolic figures in American folklore: Yankee Doodle, a British-inspired nickname for American colonials during the American Revolution, and Brother Jonathan, a rural American wit who, by surprising displays of native intelligence, always triumphed over his adversaries in plays, stories, cartoons, and verse.
Uncle Sam has been featured in this album cover as Ice cube is using Uncle Sam as a metaphor by saying America is dying hence why Uncle Sam is dead with the stars and stripes over the top of him.
week 12 May 14th
This week I created my final album cover. I started by creating a black background then embedding my main image into the centre of the page. I then made a copy of the main image and using the eraser tool removed everything apart from the teeth, then on the cover a made it black and white then using the other copy kept the colour the same then placed it where the teeth should be on the black and white image making the artist black and white except his teeth making his grill stand out more signifying wealth and possession. I then considered which text I should use I then decided to go with a serif font .
I got my model to wear a teeth grill to signify money and wealth.
This week I also created a flyer promoting Papa Pueblo and his tour, I started by creating a black back ground then getting my main image and placing it in the centre of the page, I then change the hue/saturation of the image making it a blue/purple colour to make it more vibrant and eye catching. In the photo you see my model with his eyes almost shut implying that he is under the influence of a variety of substances and floating money which is carrying on the theme of money and wealth. I then gathered various pieces of background effects of the internet to put over the background. I decided to go with the paint splatter effect, so I embedded it over the black background then changed the setting from normal to divide making it the opposite colours which then made it black with white/ blue splats on it. After I then inserted my text. After seeing a flyer promoting the rapper Travis Scott which had wave font i wanted to attempt something like that so I asked my lecture how I could do it, I got a sans serif font off dafont and inserted it into my design I then went to filter, liquify thunked the tool to make it wavey, i then did the same with all my other text (flight tour, the great american tour and the tour dates). I think this adds effect to the flyer as it makes it eye catching due to the unique font and isn’t like other flyers.
week 13 May 21st submit 25th
This week I created a logo for my artist for people to recgonise him by, I went onto dafont and in the search bar typed in money and P then put into photoshop and using the filter- adjustments- colour changed it blue, I then got a 2 using the same font and did the same (changed it to blue) then put the 2 slightly behind P. I came up with this idea as my artist’s name is Papa Pueblo so originally I was going to have PP but then I came up with the idea to use one P then put the squared equation next to it, as squared means times by itself it would then become PP.
I also started to research existing hip hop artist’s websites to get an idea of the layout, colours used, and what have been included.
This is Kendrick Lamar’s website, I like this design because the layout is simple but effective, they have used up majority of the space by including recent releases, and tabs which would lead you to a Facebook, instagram, iTunes, spotify and twitter link.
This is the Migos website design, this is my favourite design out of the 3 because i like the layout of it, it is easy to read and is a simple design, there is a lot of un-used space which allows all the focus to be on the main tabs, the image of the Migos and the timed image gallery.
This is ASAP Mobs website design, I like this design because there is a lot going on and how every bit of space has been used up, i also like how it shows the new songs that will be coming out and on which date. The website also consists of existing music videos created by asap mob and has little tabs in the top right which will either take you to: music, news, media, tour, join, lyrics and store.
As my main target audience is teenagers I realised that majority of them would look at the website through their phones so I created a website design in the style you would as if you were looking at it on your phone.
I started off by making back background, then embedded my main image in centre of my page, I then changed the colour and the hue saturation to blue which made it stand out due to the black back ground then got two arrow icons and placed them either side of the main image to imply you flick through different images as it is supposedly a gallery i then created a little circle using the shape tool and changed the colour of the inside to a light grey then made four other copies and placed them next to each other under the main image showing that there would be more images to view and to inform which photo you are on, Hence why the first circle has a more brighter ring on the outside than the others. I then placed my logo into the top left hand side to so people can regonise my artist. I then added my main text (Papa Pueblo), I used a serif font one that i have previously used in some of my other promotional designs to keep an on-going theme, using the eye dropper tool I clicked on the main image, this then gave me the colour used, then using the pain bucket tool I changed the colour of my main text to the same as my main image. After I included a search bar in the top right corner so fans and the audience can search for what they are looking for if they do not know where to look. Then using my text tool i put in my menu option this included, music- any music my artist has created, videos- music videos/ live event videos, news- biography of my artist or any recent news, tour- tour dates and locations, follow- instagram, twitter, Facebook accounts and store- where you can buy merchandise.
also this week I have been researching merchandise, merchandise is made to promote hip hop artists, I have noticed that either black and white colours are mainly used with a large image in the centre of the front, it normally has either the artist face, their logo or their name.
after looking at previous existing merchandise products I began to create my own, I made a short sleeve t shirt with my artists logo on the left on the front and then in the centre on the back, I did this by getting a plain black t shirt off the internet then putting my logos onto it.
For the other I got a plain black hat off the internet and did the same.
This is another piece go merchandise I have created, I did this by getting a white long sleeve off the internet and then embedding my logo in the centre of the shirt.
these then would be sold off the website and and concerts to the fans/ audience.
in the last week of this project I decided to create another album cover, I chose to do this as i felt I should be more creative with the album cover and should link to my artists background and life more. so I began to research artist who design unique posters
After looking at collages and decided I was going to attempt something similar to it I began to research collage artists, where they were educated, date of birth (and death) and where they are located.
- Herbert Gurshner
- Marcus Harvey
- Nick Gentry
- Hannah Hoch
I was going to attempt something like the third and fourth image but I found it difficult to make it look like and serious professional post so i decide to merge three images together the cut out the eye of different photos I took and place them over the existing eyes.
after creating my main image I decided to get a pastel effect then placed it over the main image then using the eraser tool i turned down the opacity and the hardness of the tool and rubbed out some of the effect which was covering the face this then allowed you to see more of the face but still had the pastel effect there. I chose to combine different images of the artists face to signify his fragmented background and show the different lives he has lived and the different personalities he has. I used the different eyes by using the marque tool selecting what was needed the right clicked the via layout cut which separated it from the image it was originally from I then placed it over the three over images I had combined, one eye was looking towards the right on the same side the face was facing and the other I made slightly bigger which was looking straight at you. I then included my text which was the name of my artists and the name of the album. I tried a variety of fonts but went with a serif font which i had previously used in some of my other promotional material which allowed me to keep the same theme going.
I made some adjustments to my album cover as I felt the ‘Papa’ was too spaced out so i cut the first p and the second a and move them closer together, I also tried using different fonts for the word flight this is because when I created my back cover I used a sans serif font for the names of my song so I used a a san serif font on the font to keep the continuity going.
After creating my front album cover I started to work on the back cover, I started off by using a image I took when I was in New York, I chose to use this photo as my artist moved to New York when his career took of and now he’s living a good life hence why I have taken a birds eye view shot of New York to signify he’s high in the industry. After embedding my image a crumbled paper effect then placed it over my image then turned down the opacity this then mad it look like an old photo which adds effect to the black and white and keeps the contiunity going from the front cover. I then added in my songs at the bottom of the cover but I was unsure of what font to use, I used a variety of san and san serif fonts but was still unsure, so I got some feedback from my lectures and decided to go for a sans serif font, I also felt that the text was too big so I came up with two more songs which gave me 12 which allowed me to create three throws of four songs.
